Deceitful about coverage

Updated by user Apr 26, 2023

Blue Cross Blue Shield admitted they were at fault and agreed to pay 50% but the check has still not arrived. I am, therefore, technically still awaiting a resolution.

I asked many questions and took notes before enrolling in their Medicare Advantage plan. Prior to making any appointments, I read the booklet and called with additional questions and took notes. The vision benefits were a joke - very limited coverage and providers. They no longer honor any of the major chains like LensCrafters or 1-800 Contacts, only little dinky local people who did not have my frames and my lenses weren't covered. Now onto the dental fiasco. I read to booklet and it was very vague. HMMM. I called and took notes. Dentures were covered for 50% both in network and out of network. They said the same to my dentist when they called about coverage. Well it turns out that that is for permanent dentures only. If you have to have a temporary, the cost of almost $1000, is totally on you. This should be clear especially when a customer calls with specific questions. Fortunately, I was able to drop them because open enrollment still was open. They lost thousands because they refused $330. What a deceitful company and I had had them for 25 years previously.

Provider customer service

I am an out of state provider (Georgia), trying to confirm benefits for a BCBS of SC member. The automated line just repeats back the information that I obtain online and it is almost impossible to speak to a customer service rep for information that cannot be obtained online. I've had to have the patient call customer service directly and be added to call to get their benefits for specific outpatient surgery.

User's recommendation: Avoid BCBS of SC if your employer offers anything else.

From a medical equipment provider

I work for a company that provides durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, CPAP, breast pumps). Let me say something about this specific BCBS branch... they are awful! It's almost impossible to make contact with anyone there for verify specialized benefits information like for breast pumps. I have been on the phone with patients waiting for me to talk to these people and sometimes we wait for 40 minutes - unacceptable. If you're lucky enough to get ahold of a representative, you may or may not get the right answer about benefits. We've had several patients with this insurance have their multi-thousand dollar PAP machines denied after we received authorization to give them the machines because these people are a mess. Do not use BCBS South Carolina! They are terrible for providers AND patients. Go through BCBS Kansas, Michigan, anywhere but South Carolina.

Horrible company, pays for nothing, awful Junk policy coverage.

I would not have taken my current job had I realized how terrible the insurance coverage is. I pay over 15K a year for a family plan that seems to cover nothing. Prescriptions are now included in deductible so medications that cost $25 under my previous coverage are $750 a month under BCBS of SC. I can either take my meds or feed my family. Avoid this god awful company like the plague if you can, they cover nothing, require "pre-authorization" for everything, provide junk coverage and just take your money. This company is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with health insurance in the USA. Rip off artists selling junk coverage and providing no benefits, all for the wonderfully low price of over twenty thousand dollars a year once the "deductible" is factored in.

Stuck in the 90s

Billing will be knocking on your credit report before SC BCBS acknowledges your claim. Everything is over the phone or by mail, with long wait times and weeks of mail sitting at BCBS waiting for a claim to be filed. They don't seem to know that it's 2019.
